Vietnam wants stronger ASEAN-Japan defense ties

(VNA) - Deputy Defense Minister Nguyen Chi Vinh has expressed his hope that ASEAN members and Japan will enhance links to ensure maritime security and comply with international law. At the 4th deputy-minister level ASEAN–Japan defense cooperation conference in Tokyo on Wednesday, Vinh briefed participants on the current regional security situation and plans for future cooperation.

He suggested that countries adopt a proper awareness of regional security, especially the interpretation and application of the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS). The Deputy Minister added that they should act in conformity with international law in an open and transparent manner to ensure maritime security, safety, and peace in the region.
