Hang made the statement on Friday while answering reporters’ queries about PM Abe’s declaration to resign because of a health problem.

PM Abe has been trusted by the Japanese people for years, she said, adding that he is a leader who has made many contributions to the development of Japan and promotion of cooperation in different fields in the region and the world.

“Vietnam wishes PM Abe good health and happiness and continuing to make important contributions to the development of Japan as well as the cooperation and friendship between Vietnam and Japan,” the spokeswoman said.

US President Donald Trump said he was surprised by Mr. Abe's stepping down and paid his highest respect to a great friend of him. Mr. Trump called Mr. Abe a great gentleman, saying they had a great relationship.

South Korean President Moon Jae-in's office said Mr. Abe dedicated many years to the development of bilateral relations and achieved “various meaningful accomplishments” as Japan's longest-serving prime minister. It said Seoul will continue to work with Tokyo’s next prime minister and Cabinet to promote “friendship and cooperation” between the countries.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel sent Mr. Abe a message saying he was always a constructive and reliable partner in their common commitment to multilateralism, free trade, peaceful conflict resolution and rules-based order.

Philippine Foreign Secretary Teodoro Locsin Jr. said in a tweet that said PM Abe is a very good friend of the Philippines and has a frank relationship with Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte.

Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison paid tribute to PM Abe as “Australia’s true friend” and said that he would like to thank him for his enduring commitment to Australia-Japan relations over a long and successful career.
