(VOVWORLD) - More than 69 million voters across Vietnam are going to the poll to elect new National Assembly and People's Council members for the 2021-2026 tenure.
Voting began nationwide at 7 am on Sunday and is scheduled to end at 7 pm the same day.
866 candidates are vying for 500 seats in the National Assembly and nearly 270,000 deputies will be elected among nearly 450,000 candidates for People's Councils at all levels for the next 5 years.
As COVID-19 continues to spread, strict prevention measures are enforced to ensure voters’ safety and health.

Party General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong, who cast his ballots in Hanoi, said he and other voters nationwide hope that the new NA and People’s Council deputies will do their utmost for the sake of the people and the country, fulfilling their responsibilities and duties in line with the Constitution and laws.
He expressed his belief that the largest-ever general elections in Vietnam will be a success and truly a festival of all people.

Talking to the press after voting in HCM city, President Nguyen Xuan Phuc underlined the need to further consolidate national unity.
He called on voters nationwide to bring into play the spirit of solidarity and select moral and talented persons to the NA and People’s Councils.

National Assembly Chairman Vuong Dinh Hue, who cast his votes in the northern city of Hai Phong, said he is happy to see a high turnout of 99.96% during early voting in certain areas in 16 provinces on Saturday with around half a million voters going to the polls, despite COVID-19.
He said he expects the new legislature will bolster reforms to enhance its performance and truly be the highest representative body of the people and the highest organ of State power of Vietnam.

Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh said after voting in the Mekong Delta city of Can Tho that he is delighted to see voters eagerly taking part in the elections, which are a festival of the people, contributing to building socialist democracy and a law-governed State of the people, by the people and for the people.
He noted that the elections have been held in a democratic, open, transparent and fair manner in accordance with the law.
