Vietnam-US relations cemented

(VOVworld) – The US-Vietnam relationship is being consolidated and promoted comprehensively on the basis of increased trust building after a recent US visit by President Truong Tan Sang. US Ambassador to Vietnam David Shear, on Wednesday, told reporters in Hanoi about main topics of discussions between the two countries’ leaders in late July, notably the upgrading of Vietnamese-US relations to that of a comprehensive partnership.

The US diplomat said talks between President Sang and President Obama were open and candid, covering sensitive issues such as human rights and the full removal of an embargo on arms trading. Their joint statement said both sides were keen on building trust and expanding cooperation beyond education, culture, and economics. During Sang’s visit, US leaders promised to support Vietnam in its development, market competitiveness, and climate change adaptation. Shear said that the American public appreciated Sang’s visit and considered it clear evidence of the trust building between the two countries. He said: "We think President Sang’s meeting in Washington reflects the great progress we’ve seen in bilateral relations. We established the comprehensive partnership. We issued a very strong joint statement. President Sang and President Obama had a very wide ranging and useful conversation in the White Hose. The joint statement we issued not only reflects the progress we experienced in the past couples of years but also registers some of our goals bilaterally for the future."

According to the US Ambassador, both sides will discuss a civil nuclear agreement and seek to conclude the Trans-Pacific Partnership negotiations by the end of this year.  US Secretary of State John Kerry is expected to visit Vietnam later this year and leaders from both countries will continue bilateral talks at the APEC forum and the ASEAN summit this year.
