Washington created ‘Cuban Twitter’ to stir political unrest
(VOVworld) – The Associated Press reported on Thursday that 4 years ago the US government secretly financed a social network in Cuba with the aim of stirring political unrest and weakening the Cuban government. The secret program of the US Agency for International Development (USAID) bypassed any internet restrictions in Cuba to create a Cuban Twitter message service which could used to foment anti-government protests. The project, which lasted more than two years until it ended in 2012, operated under the cover of companies in Spain and the Cayman Islands that received financial support through foreign banks.
The White House has denied USAID support for any secret social network in Cuba. White House spokesperson Jay Carney said there was a program designed to give Cuban people a forum in which to voice their personal thoughts. The program was carried out within US laws and was discussed publicly in the US Congress.
