(VOVWORLD) -Women’s role in fighting natural disasters topped the agenda of Tuesday’s seminar co-organized by the National Steering Committee for Natural Disaster Prevention and Control and the United Nations Entity for Gender Equality and Empowerment of Women (UNWOMEN) in Vietnam.

Participants discussed women's perspective on natural disasters and promotion of women's capacity and contribution, and solutions to gender equality, women's empowerment, and safety for women and girls in disaster situations.
Tran Quang Hoai, Deputy Head of the National Steering Committee for Natural Disaster Prevention and Control, underscored women’s important role in combating natural disasters, which he said is clearly reflected in the Law on Natural Disaster Prevention and Control.
He said: “Currently, the role of women is getting higher and higher in natural disaster prevention and control. Not only in the family but also in society, local women, especially the grassroots task force, actively participate in the preparation of food and necessities as well as in rebuilding their lives after a disaster.”
Vice President of the Vietnam Women's Union Nguyen Thi Minh Huong said that women are both directly affected and an important factor in the process of natural disaster prevention and control and adaptation to climate change. Natural disaster prevention and control is one of the key tasks the Vietnam Women's Union has carried out over the past several terms.
