World community shows unity with Russia following St. Petersburg blast

(VOVworld) – The international community has expressed unity with Russia following a metro blast in St. Petersburg on Monday which killed dozens of people. Vietnamese President Tran Dai Quang sent a message of sympathy to President Vladimir Putin while a spokesperson for Vietnam's Foreign Ministry strongly denounced the attack.

The UN Security Council sent its condolences to Russia and called for further support from all UN members. UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres denounced the bombing and said the culprits will be punished. UN High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Federica Mogherini said 28 EU foreign ministers, who are attending a meeting in Luxembourg city, are on Russia’s side.

White House spokesperson Sean Spicer said the US is willing to assist Russia in its investigation while President Donald Trump called the attack “a terrible thing”. French President Francois Hollande said it is necessary to be alert to terrorism risks.

At least 14 people were killed and 50 injured by a blast that rocked St. Petersburg’s Sennaya metro station when an explosive device went off on a train. A second explosive device was defused at the Vosstaniya Square station. Russian police have 2 suspects, 1 with links to Islamic groups is a 23-year-old man from Kyrgyzstan. St. Petersburg authorities announced 3 days of mourning for the victims and called for stricter security in Moscow.
