World tourism industry hit hard by COVID-19

(VOVWORLD) - Korean intermediary companies on Monday forecast that the revenue of leading travel agencies in the second quarter of 2020 will drop sharply due to the COVID-19 pandemic. 

The number of Korean tourists traveling abroad was more than 31,000 in April, down 98.6% from the same period last year. Meanwhile, arrivals to Korea totaled 290,000, down more than 98% compared to the same period last year.

On Monday, the Spanish National Statistics Office said there were no visitors to Spain in April because of a COVID-19 lockdown. Tourism revenue in the first 4 months of this year was 50% less than last year.

Canadian Economic Development Minister Melanie Joly announced that a 22 million USD plan to attract foreign tourists will be modified to encourage Canadians to travel and explore domestic tourist destinations.

According to worldometers.info, the world has recorded more than 6.3 million COVID-19 cases and more than 377,000 deaths. 2.9 million patients have recovered.

The US remains the epicenter of the epidemic with more than 1.8 million infections and 107,000 deaths.
