Xi’s visit to Russia aims to promote peace, bilateral trust

(VOVWORLD) - Chinese President Xi Jinping’s ongoing trip to Russia topped Monday’s headlines. The two countries established a "no-limit" partnership last February and Xi’s visit aims to reinforce trust and enhance cooperation between them.

China also wants to promote its role as a mediator for the Russia-Ukraine conflict, although the idea is viewed skeptically by Western countries.

Putin's top foreign policy adviser Yuri Ushakov said that, after talks, President Xi and President Putin will sign a joint statement on strengthening bilateral comprehensive partnership and strategic relations in the new era, and a joint statement on economic cooperation until 2030.

On the eve of Xi’s visit, President Putin wrote an article for the People's Daily newspaper titled "Russia and China: A Future-Bound Partnership". In the article, posted on the Kremlin website, Putin says Xi’s visit reaffirms the special nature of the Russia-China partnership, which has always been built on mutual trust and respect for each other's sovereignty and interests. Russia-China relations have reached their highest level in history and are gaining even more strength.

Putin noted that one of their priorities is their trade and economic partnership. In 2022, the two-way trade totaled a record 185 billion USD. Both sides believe that their target of 200 billion USD will be surpassed this year.
