Raising the value of Vietnam’s export rice
(VOVworld)-Vietnam has become one the three biggest rice exporters in the world thanks to its continuous efforts in agricultural production over the last 20 years.
In spite of achievements in the rice industry, Vietnamese farmers’ income has not improved. Vietnam rice exports still depend on a few major markets and the value of exported rice is not high. Many experts see an urgent need to improve the competitiveness of Vietnam’s rice industry. Mr Nguyen Duc Thanh, Director of the Vietnam Centre for Economic and Policy Research said: “We need an agency that can guide and control the rice production chain in which producers play a key role. Based on many studies, we recommend more investment in milling facilities especially those located near rice fields, where we can make adjustments and adapt right away to any market changes. It is also an industry where private businesses can join in.”
