Vietnam leads in implementing ASEAN economic commitments
(VOVworld) – Deputy Foreign Minister Le Hoai Trung chaired a meeting of agencies involved in ASEAN cooperation in Hanoi on Tuesday. Delegates agreed that all ministries and agencies should strengthen their coordination to implement the remaining commitments before the ASEAN Community is established on December 31, 2015. Reports said that more than 85% of the targets set out in the roadmap to establish the ASEAN Community have been completed. ASEAN countries have implemented approximately 40% of the ASEAN Connectivity Masterplan and 285 projects within the ASEAN Connectivity Initiative. Vietnam has taken the lead in impelmenting commitments to establish an ASEAN Community, according to Deputy Foreign Minister Le Hoai Trung: “Vietnam and Singapore have been the leaders in implementing economic commitments. ASEAN has an increasingly important role in Vietnamn’s foreign policy, socio-economic development, and international integration. As we will soon mark 20 years of Vietnam’s ASEAN membership and celebrate the establishment of an ASEAN Community, we should continue to accomplish our tasks and responsibilities.”

Delegates proposed a number of measures for better coordination including participating in important ASEAN events this year including the 48th ASEAN Foreign Ministers’ Meeting, the ASEAN Regional Forum, the East Asia Summit, and the ASEAN Summit. Other measures include increasing communications on the ASEAN Community to help people understand ASEAN and Vietnam’s role and position in the grouping as well as its priorities in the coming years.
