Vietnam successfully fulfills tasks as UNESCO Executive Council’s member

(VOVworld) – UNESCO has praised and thanked Vietnam for a successful term of membership of the UNESCO Executive Council. Deputy Foreign Minister Nguyen Thanh Son, who is also Chairman of the Vietnam National UNESCO Commission, told Radio the Voice of Vietnam following his meeting with UNESCO Director-General Irina Bokova on the sidelines of the 37th session of the UNESCO's General Conference in Paris.

Son said that during its 4-year membership of the executive council, Vietnam provided UNESCO with timely support when necessary to prove it a responsible member. International friends and UNESCO states appreciated Vietnam’s responsibility and cooperation. Son told reporter about Vietnam’s future UNESCO participation: "Vietnam will run for a post of the World Heritage Committee at this 37th session. Vietnam made effective contributions to the organization’s works when it acted as an executive council’s member, leaving precious lessons of cooperation between UNESCO members. UNESCO Director-General Irina Bokova spoke highly of Vietnam’s cooperation, especially its sympathy to UNESCO’s financial difficulty, adding that Vietnam actively proposed what it could assist, which received applause from members of the executive council".

Son informed reporter that UNESCO adopted a resolution honoring world famous personality including great Vietnamese poet Nguyen Du with “The Tale of Kieu” – an epic poem in the ancient Vietnamese characters. UNESCO has called for a world celebration of Nguyen Du’s 250th birthday.
