(VOVworld) – Vietnam supports dialogues and co-operation, upholds international law, promotes consensus, and works to reduce confrontation and politicisation of discussions, said Deputy Foreign Minister Nguyen Quoc Cuong at a high-level segment of the 28^th UN Human Rights Council session in Geneva on Tuesday.

Cuong said since its establishment in 1996, the UN Human Rights Council has made great contributions to protecting and promoting human rights by raising social awareness and developing objective and comprehensive approaches on human rights. He said the UN Human Rights Council needs to continue ensuring human rights in practice and provide more support for developing countries and vulnerable groups.
Cuong highlighted Vietnam’s achievements in the protection and promotion of human rights and its efforts in realising international commitments on human rights, including its acceptance of the Universal Periodic Review’s recommendations and voluntary commitments as a member of the UN Human Rights Council. Vietnam also ratified the Convention against Torture and other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatments or Punishments (CAT) and the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities.
On the sidelines of the high-level segment, Deputy Foreign Minister Nguyen Quoc Cuong delivered a speech at a high-level discussion on promoting the global standardisation of the CAT. He also met with officials from Georgia, Japan, Serbia, Cyprus, and the US to discuss ways to strengthen bi-lateral co-operation and co-ordination at the HRC and other multi-lateral forums.
