First private deep-water container port opens in Hai Phong

(VOVWORLD) - The Hateco Hai Phong International Container Terminal (HHIT) has officially been put into operation in Lach Huyen, Hai Phong city. Invested with private capital, this is Vietnam’s first smart port with automated entry and exit gates, semi-automated wharves, and the capacity to handle the world’s largest ships.

The port covers an area of 73 hectares, and has a 900-meter-long berth and a water depth ranging from 16.8 to 18.4 meters. It is capable of accommodating two ultra-large container vessels with a maximum vessel length of 400 meters at the same time.

The port uses a smart Terminal Operating System (TOS) to manage all activities, a real-time monitoring Operation Center, QR and OCR recognition technology, and a smart security alert system. It’s the first port in Vietnam to use the Truck Appointment System (TAS), enabling drivers to save time and improve operational efficiency.

Nguyen Duc Tho, Vice Chairman of the Hai Phong People’s Committee, underscored the attractiveness of private investment into Vietnam’s seaport system. “This project is very important for the Hateco Group as well as for Hai Phong’s development. Its berths will help meet the growing demand for cargo transport. They connect Hai Phong port with major ports around the world, reduce logistics costs, and contribute to the budget of the State and Hai Phong,” said Tho.

Nguyen Xuan Sang, Deputy Minister of Construction, said the Hateco Hai Phong International Container Terminal validates the Party and State’s incentivization for private investment in national infrastructure, especially in the maritime industry.

“This deep-water port will meet the import and export needs of Hai Phong and northern provinces. I highly appreciate the policy to mobilize resources for infrastructure development, including maritime, road, and soon high-speed rail, which will play a crucial role in socio-economic development in the north and across the country,” said Sang.

Following this northern seaport project, Hateco will go ahead with other port projects in central and southern Vietnam, creating a unified logistics chain for economic development.
