(VOVWORLD) - The 13th National Congress of the Communist Party of Vietnam opened in Hanoi on Tuesday drawing 1,587 delegates representing more than 5.1 million Party members.

Party General Secretary and President Nguyen Phu Trong, Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc, National Assembly Chairwoman Nguyen Thi Kim Ngan, former Party and State leaders, and representatives of foreign missions in Vietnam were among the attendees at the opening session.

On behalf of the Presidium, Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc delivered the opening speech. He said the 13th National Party Congress is taking place with Vietnam facing both challenges and opportunities from complicated regional developments to the global challenges of climate change, natural disasters, diseases, and rapid technological advances.
Mr. Phuc said Party officials and members and the Vietnamese people have confidence in the Congress to rally resources and inspire national unity to grow strongly and sustainably.
"The 13th National Party Congress has great responsibility to the Fatherland, the people and the nation, not just in the next five years, but in the decades to come. The Congress will review 35 years of renewal, 30 years of implementing the 1991 Political Platform, 10 years of implementing the 2011 Platform, and the implementation of the 2011-2020 socio-economic development strategy, and set out socio-economic development orientations and tasks for 2021-2025, as well as targets and directions until 2030 with a vision to 2045," he said.
The Congress will also review Party building and rectification and the leadership of the 12th Party Central Committee, determine orientation and tasks of the Party in the new tenure, evaluate the implementation of Party regulations, and elect the 13th Party Central Committee, said the Prime Minister.
Mr. Phuc said he believes that with sound direction, a strong aspiration for development and great political determination, the Party, the people and the army will gain new achievements and build a prosperous, happy Vietnam respected by powerful countries around the world.
Party General Secretary and President Nguyen Phu Trong presented the 12th Party Central Committee’s report on documents for the Congress. Mr. Trong focused on the preparations of the documents, review of the 12th Party tenure and 35 years of national renewal and tasks of the 13th tenure and beyond.
