More than 590,700 new cases and 9,780 deaths were reported globally in the past 24 hours. The US remains the hardest-hit country with more than 100,000 new cases, followed by India and Iran.
According to Dr. Anthony Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, the US could get COVID-19 under control by early next year if vaccinations ramp up.
Indonesia had the most new COVID-19 deaths, more than 1,000, followed by the US and Brazil.
