(VOVworld)-Delegations from the Party Committee and administration of Dien Bien province and the General Department of Customs today/ on Tuesday laid a wreath and burned incense at the Independence Martyrs’ Cemetery, marking the 59th anniversary of the Victory at Dien Bien Phu on May 7, 1954.

Delegates paid tribute to the soldiers who sacrificed their lives in the Dien Bien Phu campaign and pledged to join efforts to make Dien Bien province the economic, political and cultural center of the Northwestern region.
The People’s Army newspaper today ran an editorial praising the Dien Bien Phu victory in 1954 - a historic milestone of Vietnam. The editorial said the victory symbolized Vietnamese people’s staunchness, intelligence, and spirit during their revolutionary struggles. The victory reflected the wise leadership of the Communist Party of Vietnam and President Ho Chi Minh in the fight for national independence and freedom.
The New Hanoi newspaper today also carried an article about a number of war veterans, who excel in political and social movements in their places of residence. The veterans are shinning examples, helping educate younger generations on patriotism.
The same day, the Vietnam War Veterans’ Association, the Voice of Vietnam and the National Oil and Gas Group launched a writing contest called “Memories of Dien Bien”. The purpose of the contest is to honor the heroic revolution of the Vietnamese army and people during the Dien Bien Phu campaign and the clear-sighted leadership of the Communist Party of Vietnam led by President Ho Chi Minh. Vice president of the Vietnam War Veterans’ Association, Phung Khac Dang, Head of the organizing board said: "We hope that the contest will help promote our glorious history. It will add valuable documents contributed by those involved in the Dien Bien Phu campaign to our archives about this historic victory." Vu Hai, Deputy General Director of the Voice of Vietnam said: "Entries will be broadcast by the Voice of Vietnam in its radio program about war veterans. We also plan to introduce them to the audience on radio, television, newspaper, and online. This will be one of our activities in anticipation of the 60th anniversary of the Dien Bien Phu victory and the 70th anniversary of the establishment of the Vietnam People’s Army."
An awards ceremony will be held before May 7th, 2014 marking 60 years of the Dien Bien Phu victory. The best 100 entries will be compiled into 2 volumes.
