Deputy Minister of National Defense Pham Hoai Nam said that the victories in 1964 remain a symbol of Vietnam's indomitable spirit. They affirmed the determination, courage, and prowess of the Navy in particular and of the entire Vietnamese army and people in general, Mr. Nam said.
He emphasized the need to continue promoting the tradition and learn from the victory, enhance leadership, and strictly implement the Party and State's policies on national defense. Focus should be placed on building a politically strong naval force that remains steadfast and absolutely loyal to the Party, the nation, and the people under any circumstances, he said.
“The Navy must always be ready to fight and sacrifice to firmly protect the sacred sovereignty of the nation's seas and islands.”
On August 2 and 5, 1964, the Vietnam People's Navy fought off the American destroyer USS Maddox from Vietnamese waters. This victory marked the first major triumph of the Northern Vietnamese military and people in resisting US aerial and naval attacks.
