Angela Merkel: TTIP must benefit EU
(VOVworld) - The EU must secure an ambitious Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP) agreement with the US, German Chancellor Angela Merkel said Wednesday. But, she added, people should not raise their hopes too high on the TTIP deal, which will depend on whether it benefits Europe or not.

Negotiations between the EU and the US on the TTIP agreement have been controversial. France, one of the biggest European economies, warned of halting negotiations because of Washington's reluctance to make concessions. Greenpeace Netherlands, an environmental organization, leaked a 248-page secret document of the TTIP, revealing that the deal gives priority to business interests rather than to environmental regulations and consumer rights. This has triggered opposition in many European countries.
