ARF workshop discusses regional cooperation in maritime law enforcement

(VOVWORLD) - The third ASEAN Regional Forum (ARF) workshop on enhancing cooperation in maritime law enforcement was jointly held on Tuesday and Wednesday by the Vietnamese Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, and the European Commission.

At the opening session, Director of the Vietnamese Foreign Ministry’s ASEAN Department Vu Ho, who co-chaired the workshop, said seas and oceans are important to all countries, who have a common interest in ensuring peace, security, and environmental in all sea areas. Countries should continue cooperation between their maritime law enforcement forces, he said.

Delegates discussed several cooperation models for maritime law enforcement forces in the Mediterranean Sea and the Somalian Sea to reduce international crime and increase environmental protection. Cooperation includes sharing information, setting up hotlines, building mechanisms for joint monitoring and observation, conducting joint patrols, and developing a code of conduct.
