ASEAN Foreign Ministers issue statement on situation in Syria
(VOVWORLD) - ASEAN Foreign Ministers have urged all parties involved in the Syria conflict to work towards a sustainable political solution through dialogue and negotiation.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, the ministers said ASEAN nations condemn in the strongest possible terms the use of chemical weapons by any party under any circumstances, as this constitutes a serious violation of international law. It said ASEAN members take their international obligations as State Parties to the Chemical Weapons Convention (CWC) seriously, adding they encourage the concerned sides to extend their full support, in line with their obligations under the CWC.
The statement also said the situation in Syria is of serious concern in terms of international peace and stability. The ministers expressed their concern on the deterioration of the issue and urged all parties to exercise restraint and settle their dispute by peaceful means in accordance with international law, including the UN Charter and the relevant UN Security Council Resolutions.
They stressed that everyone involved must take steps to avoid escalation and ensure the safety and security of civilians. The ministers also called on all parties to work towards a sustainable political solution through inclusive, meaningful and non-sectarian dialogue and negotiation.
