Ms. Ngo, alias Hanoi Hannah, was known to American soldiers during the war for broadcasting a nostalgic mix of folk songs, lists of US soldiers who had been killed or captured, and news of on anti-war protests back home.

The interview was conducted by reporter Hoang Huong in October 2010 when Ms. Ngo visited Hanoi on the occasion of the millennial anniversary of Thang Long-Hanoi and VOV, where she used to work.

During a 37-minute interview, Ms. Ngo recalled how she got the chance to work at VOV as an announcer, how she got to know radio, the problems and attitudes of broadcasters who had to work beneath US bombing, how to talk to American soldiers to convince them that they were fighting an unjust war, and memories of her life as a journalist.
She said if she had a second life, she would still want to be a radio announcer.

Huynh Thang Long, the Center’s Deputy Director, said this is the first time the Center has been given such an important recording.

Ms. Ngo, the former English broadcaster, once swayed American soldiers in Vietnam and strongly influenced the American public and other listeners around the world.
