(VOVworld) – Australia will strengthen cooperation with Iraq in the fight against the Islamic State (IS), said Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott during talks with his Iraqi counterpart Haider al-Abadi on Sunday.

During his unannounced visit to Baghdad, Abbott said Australia has pledged 5 million USD in aid to Iraq for the fight against terrorists. The two leaders discussed military cooperation that will include training and equipment for the Iraqi forces. Abbott said Australia will deepen cooperation with the government and people of Iraq to sustain national interests and universal values.
PM Abbott met with Australia’s Defense forces who are participating in the US-led coalition combating the IS. Australia is among the first countries to support the US-led air strikes targeting the IS in Iraq.
