(VOVworld)- The Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade on Tuesday summoned the Chinese Ambassador to convey Australia's concerns and to seek an explanation of China's intention to establish an air defense identification zone (ADIZ) in the East China Sea.

Foreign Minister Julie Bishop said the timing and manner of China's announcement are unhelpful in light of the current regional tensions and do not contribute to regional stability. Bishop said Australia has made clear its opposition to any coercive or unilateral action to change the status quo in the East China Sea. According to China’s announcement last Saturday, all aircraft entering the zone must maintain radio contact, reveal their air route, and obey the instructions of Chinese authorities. This announcement has triggered strong reactions from Japan and South Korea. Tokyo says it does not accept the ADIZ, which includes territory disputed by the two countries, specifically Senkaku/ Diaoyu Island. Meanwhile, Seoul protested the ADIZ which covers an area West of South Korea’s Jeju Island. The US also criticized China for establishing the ADIZ, creating tension in the region, and hindering its allies’ interests.
