According to a spokesperson for the Bengali National Parliament, Sharmin Chaudhury, Bangladesh’s President chaired the ceremony. The Awami League (AL) party won decisively in the elections on January 5 which drew only 20% of the voters, compared to 87% in the previous election. At least 28 people were killed in post-election violence. A coalition of 18 opposition parties led by the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) boycotted the election and initiated a strike last week in an attempt to cancel the election. Many countries and international organizations including the US and the European Union refused to send observers to monitor the election, since they doubted the election’s validity.
