(VOVWORLD) - US Secretary of State Antony Blinken met Sunday with Jordan's King Abdullah II and Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi, during a week-long visit to the Middle East to seek ways to prevent the Hamas-Israel conflict from spreading.

Minister Safadi emphasized the need to de-escalate tensions, protect civilians in the Gaza Strip, and provide sustained support for humanitarian aid, religious initiatives, and healthcare in the region.
King Abdullah said that the US plays an important role in persuading Israel to accept a ceasefire agreement and warned of dire consequences if the Hamas-Israel conflict continues.
Blinken is scheduled to visit Qatar and the UAE next.
