Brexit referendum begins

(VOVworld) – Britons go to the polls on Thursday in an historic referendum on whether the UK should remain a member of the European Union or leave.

An estimated 46.5 million people are entitled to take part in the vote, a record number for a UK election. After the referendum polls close at 22h local time, the sealed ballot boxes will be collected and transported to the count venue for each of the 382 local voting constituencies. These represent all 380 local government area in England, Scotland and Wales, plus one each for Northern Ireland and Gibraltar.

A phone poll by ComRes for the Daily Mail and ITV News gave Remain a 6-point lead over Leave - on 48% compared to 42%. And a survey by YouGov showed that the rates were 51% and 49%.

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau on June 22 urged Britons to choose to stay in the EU and expressed his hope that he would continue to hear London’s prominent voice in the European Union. He said he is not in favour of the so-called “Brexit” campaign to leave the EU and believed that countries were stronger together.
