Cambodian, US media highlights former President’s merits
(VOVWORLD) - Cambodia’s media on Friday gave a wide coverage to Vietnam’s former President Le Duc Anh who passed away on April 22 in Hanoi, highlighting his contributions to Vietnam’s revolutionary cause and liberating Cambodia from the Pol Pot genocidal regime.

Freshnews, one of Cambodia’s most popular news websites, highlighted in Khmer the role of General Le Duc Anh, former commander of the Vietnamese troops in Cambodia, in helping liberate Cambodians from the genocidal regime. It also recalled General Le Duc Anh’s great contributions to the liberation of South Vietnam and national reunification.
In its front page, the Phnom Penh Post said that former President Le Duc Anh’s legacy in Cambodia’s recent history remains a prominent one, with the general best remembered for his role in commanding Vietnamese volunteer soldiers to free Cambodia from the Pol Pot regime in 1979.
Rasmei Kampuchea or Cambodia’s Light newspaper also covered news and articles on former President Le Duc Anh’s biography and his revolutionary career.
The Washington Post ran a feature on Mr. Le Duc Anh who commanded the Vietnamese volunteer soldiers in Cambodia to overthrow the Khmer Rouge regime. It also featured Mr. Le Duc Anh as the witness of Vietnam and the US establishing diplomatic ties in 1995 while he was President of Vietnam from 1992 to 1997. Mr. Le Duc Anh was also the first Vietnamese head of state to visit the US to attend the UN’s 50th founding anniversary in New York in 1995. The Washington Post highlighted President Le Duc Anh’s important role in the normalization of ties between Vietnam and the US.
