Cargo ships carrying chemical weapons from Syria protected
(VOVworld) – The naval ships of Russia and China will take part in the operation to transport the most hazardous components of chemical weapons from Syria. Eystein Kvarving, a spokesman for the command of two dry cargo ships and two frigates, made the statement on Thursday. Denmark and Norway supplied the vessels.
Kvarving said the naval ships of Russia and China will assure security during the transportation of containers with chemical agents from the port of Latakia in Syria to Italy. There, they will be reloaded into an American ship for subsequent destruction. The Russian cruiser Pyotr Veliky (Peter the Great) – armed with guided missiles, is participating in the operation, together with Chinese naval ship Yancheng. Under an agreement made between Russia and the United States, the Syrian government under President Bashar al-Assad has until mid-2014 to end that country’s chemical weapons program.
