(VOVworld) – Celebrations are held across Vietnam to mark the 70th anniversary of Vietnam’s first general election. A delegation of Party and state leaders and representatives of former National Assembly deputies paid tribute to President Ho Chi Minh at his mausoleum in Hanoi on Wednesday.

The People’s Army newspaper ran an editorial describing the event as a milestone in the development of Vietnam’s revolutionary state, opening a new period of Vietnam’s history with a National Assembly, a unified government, a progressive constitution, and a legal administration. The editorial said the National Assembly embodies national unity and represents the will, power, and aspirations of the people.

Pham Tinh of Yen Bai city said he never forgets the day Vietnam’s first general election was held on January 6, 1946: “Everyone was happy because it was our first vote since we lost our independence. I was very moved to be able to elect deputies to the first National Assembly of the Democratic Republic of Vietnam. The National Assembly has gone through 13 terms but I still find the first general election on January 6, 1946, the most emotional.”

An art program in praise of the National Assembly and its 70-year history was held on Tuesday by the National Assembly Office and the Ministry of Culture, Sports, and Tourism.
