Chile’s legislators express concern about China’s illegal actions
(VOVworld)- Vietnamese Ambassador to Chile Ha Thi Ngoc Ha met with members of the External Relations Committee of the Chilean House of Representatives to brief them about China’s illegal placement of oil rig Haiyang-981 in Vietnam’s exclusive economic zone and continental shelf. Ambassador Ha delivered a letter regarding the topic from the Chairman of the National Assembly Committee for Foreign Relations to Aldo Corjejo Gonzalez, President of Chamber of Deputies of Chile. Chilean congressmen expressed their concern about the recent Chinese actions in the East Sea and called on the parties involved to show restraint, respect the 1982 UN Convention on the Law of the Sea, and not turn the situation into an armed conflict. President of the Chile-Vietnam Culture Institute Abarzua Patricia Munoz sent a statement to the Vietnam Union of Friendship Organizations condemning China’s violation of Vietnamese sovereignty and international law and threatening of regional peace and stability. The Vietnamese Embassy in Chile sent documents describing China’s installation of its drilling rig to the Chilean Foreign Ministry, the Chilean Parliament, the Chilean Communist Party, the Socialist Party of Chile, and more than 100 diplomatic missions in Santiago.
