(VOVWORLD) - Chinese authorities of Mianyang city, Sichuan province, on Wednesday evening blasted a dam to release the surging waters behind it.

1,800 local residents were evacuated to safe shelters.
Continuing heavy rain has caused water levels in many rivers there to trigger flood warnings. Many sections of dykes have collapsed. The water level of Sichuan’s main river on Wednesday was 15 meters, the highest in the past 3 years.
On Tuesday, 6 people died and 5 went missing in Sichuan province’s Ya An city.
