China destroys reefs to build artificial islands in the East Sea
(VOVworld) – CogitAsia, a blog of the Asia Program of the Center for Strategic and International Studies, posted an article by Dr. John McManus of the University of Miami on how China built an artificial island in the East Sea. Dr. McManus analyzed how building artificial islands in Vietnam’s Truong Sa archipelago has destroyed coral reefs, which will take a long time to recover. Dr. McManus says countries should cooperate to protect the coral, and the Convention on the Regulation of Antarctic Mineral Resource Activities provides a good model for protecting ecological systems in the East Sea.
