China’s new passport policy is unusual and disputable
(VOV) –The US does not recognize the map with Cow’s tongue line in China’s new passports.
Victoria Nuland, spokesperson of US’s Department of State was responding to China’s new passports embossed with a map showing Chinese territorial claim in the 9 dash line map. She answered the reporters’ question if American customs agency stamp on those passports showing the country’s acknowledgement of China’s territorial claims: "Our position as you know, the South China Sea remains the issue that needs to be negotiated among the related States, among ASEAN and China. You know, a picture of passport doesn’t change that".
Nuland said each passport must meet basic international standards and those maps are not recognized.
In another development, Indonesian Foreign Minister Marty Natalegawa yesterday/ on Monday said this move is unusual and disputable. She said China’s intension to indirectly seek for acknowledgement of disputed territories through its new passports is unusual. It will not achieve its target and the disputes should be settled through dialogues.
Earlier, the Philippines, Vietnam and India strongly protested this move.
