(VOVWORLD) - As Con Dao island’s power consumption is forecast to double in the next 10 years, Ba Ria-Vung Tau province has mapped out different options for power supply, including grid electricity, diesel power, liquefied petroleum gas, on-site renewable energy power (wind power, solar power).

Investment in national grid power is seen as the most feasible plan. Deputy Prime Minister Le Van Thanh has assigned the Ministry of Industry and Trade to assess the investment project of a power grid for Con Dao.
It will include more than a 23 km electric line, 73 km of submarine cable, and 6.1 km of underground cable. Truong Van Thoi, Deputy Director of the provincial Department of Industry and Trade said Con Dao islanders are scheduled to have access to the national electric grid by 2026.
“In the first phase, the national electric grid on Con Dao island will continue to generate power from 9 diesel units. In the initial stage of grid operation, there are likely risks and technical problems. When the power grid operates stably, these 9 units will stop working and put into backup,” said Mr. Thoi.
