(VOVworld) – Representatives of 196 signatories to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) are working in Lima, Peru, toward a new universal agreement limiting greenhouse gas emissions, the major cause of climate change. Christiana Figueres, the convention’s Executive Secretary, told reporters that never before have the risks of climate change been so obvious or its impacts so visible, and that never before has the desire been seen at all levels of society to take climate action.

COP 20 will continue until December 12th. Participants will discuss options and hammer out commitments to protect an environment seriously degraded by human activities.
This is the last meeting before next year’s deadline for adopting a new, legally-binding universal agreement to replace the Kyoto Protocol.
