COP27 opens in Egypt

(VOVWORLD) -The 27th session of the Conference of the Parties (COP 27) opened on Sunday in Sharm El-Sheikh, Egypt.

This is the most important conference on climate in the world which drew representatives of 195 countries.

The conference is expected to mobilize the international community to act together to turn promises into reality and reach consensus in dealing with climate change, mainly drought, desertification, floods, forest fires, mangroves caused by rising sea levels with consequences, such as food and health crises, illegal immigration, instability and flare-ups outbreak of armed conflict.

Earlier, the United Nations warned that countries’ climate promises are not enough to avoid catastrophic global warming. It said that international efforts to reduce the global temperature 1.5 degrees Celsius were not enough and current commitments from governments around the world will in fact increase emissions from the 2010 benchmark by 10.6 percent by 2030. The UN also called on industrialized countries to increase financial and technological support to developing countries to cope with the impacts of climate change.
