(VOVworld) - Libya's Supreme Court on Monday ruled as unconstitutional the controversial election of Premier Ahmed Miitig in early May. Previously, former Prime Minister Abdullah al-Thani said that he would await the judiciary's decision before handing over power. Miitig was elected Libya’s new Prime Minister on May 4 at a General National Congress (GNC) voting session, in which he garnered only 113 votes, less than the 120 required by the constitution. Saleh Makhzoom, Second Vice President of the GNC, declared, however, that Miitig got 121 votes, defeating his rival, Omar al-Hassi, a university professor. Miitig will serve until Libya conducts a general election on June 25.
