COVID-19: Death toll in Italy surpasses 10,000, record number of infection cases reported in US
(VOVWORLD) - 199 countries and territories around the world had reported more than 660,000 confirmed cases of the coronavirus COVID-19 and a death toll of more than 30,000 as of 2p.m. (Vietnam time) on Saturday, according to Worldometers.info.
The US has led the world in confirmed coronavirus cases of more than 123,000 and Italy announced more than 10,000 deaths, the world’s highest death toll.
An infant less than a year old died from the coronavirus in Illinois, marking the first ever death associated with COVID-19 in an infant in the US. New York has become the biggest epicenter in the US with more than half of confirmed cases nationwide, followed by New Jersey with more than 11,000 infected cases. President Donald Trump said on Saturday that he would not seek a quarantine on New York but asked the Centers for Disease Control to issue a strong travel advisory, which will be administered by the governors in consultation with the federal government.
The Italian government announced that flags will be flown at half-mast in cities and one-minute tribute will be held for its COVID-19 victims on Tuesday across the country.
British Prime Minister Boris Johnson and Health Minister Matt Hancock tested positive for coronavirus. Chief medical officer Professor Chris Whitty and Alister Jack, the secretary of state for Scotland said they began experiencing symptoms compatible with the virus on Thursday night and are being self-quarantined.
Malaysia had announced more than 2,300 confirmed cases and 100 deaths of the virus, the highest death toll in ASEAN.
