(VOVWORLD) - The world had recorded 472 million COVID-19 infections and 6.1 million deaths as of Tuesday, according to worldometers.info.
The US remains the hardest-hit country, with more than 81.4 million infections and 998,000 deaths, followed by India with 43 million infections.
Europe is the most affected region with more than 170.8 million infections and 1.7 million deaths. COVID-19 re-emerged in Western Europe as governments simultaneously lifted pandemic restrictions, immunity dwindled, and Omicron's BA.2 variant began to spread.
The UK, France, Germany, and Italy all saw an increase in new cases in the past month, while globally infections decreased.
