The article in the Czech Republic’s Halo Noviny daily was published shortly after a ruling by the Permanent Court of Arbitration (PCA) rejected China’s territorial claims on waters within its so-called nine-dash line.

Mr. Winter wrote on the Society’s website that the Halo Noviny article demonstrated the subjectivity and lack of basis of China’s views.

He said the Philippines filed its PCA lawsuit against China because it, along with Vietnam and Malaysia, wants to resolve disputes through diplomatic, not military channels.

It’s irrational to say that countries are not allowed to file a lawsuit with the PCA if China objects, he said, arguing that any sovereign nation can sue China at an international tribunal as long as they are not Chinese colonies.

According to Mr. Winter, many countries, including the US and Japan, have protested China’s military actions and construction of artificial islands in Hoang Sa (Paracel) and Truong Sa (Spratly) archipelagoes.

He voiced support for Vietnam’s legitimate territorial claims in the East Sea.
