Mr. Dung acknowledged efforts by ministries, sectors, and localities in fighting illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing as well as obstacles that need to be overcome. He urged for urgent measures to implement recommendations on IUU made by the EC towards sustainable fishery.
Deputy Prime Minister Dung pointed out fishermen’s low awareness of law obedience, resulting in overfishing, exploiting banned marine resources, and encroaching foreign waters: “The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, other ministries, and the People’s Committees of 28 coastal cities and provinces from Quang Ninh to Kien Giang should strictly implement the Prime Minister’s Degree 45 on fighting illegal fishing. Ministries and localities should consider this a top political task to prevent the EC from issuing the red card and to get the EC lift its yellow card.”
Late last October, the EC imposed a yellow card warning on Vietnam’s seafood for failing to make progress in fighting illegal, unreported and unregulated fishing.
