The American system of voting is decentralized. Voting and counting of votes are conducted differently in different states. Americans can cast their early ballots through emails or at polling stations. More than 3.3 million Americans have already voted.

According to a CNN poll, Democratic early turnout has stayed steady and relatively ahead in Nevada and North Carolina, while Republicans have dropped by about 14,500, compared to 2012. Democrats are slightly ahead in Arizona in the early vote so far, though they are lagging Republicans in the tally of how many Arizonans have requested ballots. Support for Donald Trump is higher than for Hilary Clinton in Iowa and Ohio but most of voters there might not even decide the election. Clinton is favored in Florida, Pennsylvania, Nevada, and New Hampshire, which combine for 59 electoral votes.
