(VOVworld) – Egyptian President Abdel-Fattah Sisi announced on Tuesday that he would run for re-election in 2018 if the Egyptian people wished.

According to a post on his Facebook page, Sisi wrote that he could never fail to respond to the will of Egyptians. This was the first time the president has talked publicly about the possibility of running in the 2018 presidential election.

Sisi was elected to a four-year term as president in May 2014. The Egyptian constitution allows him to hold power for one more term. Local sources said that several MPs and members of Egypt’s political parties are planning a campaign to amend the constitution to extend Sisi’s presidency to eight years.
