The clashes erupted when several Islamists blocked the international road in Bea'r el-Aabd district in northern Sinai.

The armed forces asked the protesters who called for the reinstatement of ousted President Mohamed Morsi to open the road but the latter refused and then opened fire, shooting randomly, wounding one soldier.

Elsewhere in the Sinai, insurgents who are thought to be members of the Islamic Jihad Movement fired a rocket at a security checkpoint claiming the life of one soldier and injuring two others. Security forces were then deployed on to the main routes to track down the suspects. Recently, Egypt’s army intensified operations to uproot terrorists and hardline Jihadist movements in the peninsula, as militants since launched almost daily attacks against security forces since the ousting of Morsi in July.
