Egypt’s former president freed of murder charges
(VOVworld) - Egypt’s Cairo Court of Appeal on Monday ordered ousted Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak paroled on charges of complicity in the murder of protesters in 2011, but will keep him in detention on separate charges. Mubarak was arrested on April 12th, 2011, and was sentenced to life imprisonment for murder in June, 2012. The court accepted his appeal in January of this year and ordered a retrial for Mubarak and his Interior Minister Habib al-Adly due to irregularities in the proceeding at the preliminary hearing.

After the court’s order of a retrial, Mubarak’s lawyer submitted an appeal that the detention of the 84-year-old former president had exceeded the maximum period, which expired on April 12th under the Egyptian law. On April 7, Prosecutor-General Talaat Ibrahim Abdullah ordered the extension of Mubarak's detention because interrogations revealed that he diverted public funds allocated for maintenance of the presidential palaces to private purposes.
