In her resignation letter, Borne recommended that the new government push on with reforms that her administration has been pursuing for the past 20 months.

On social network X, Macron confirmed Borne’s resignation and instructed the current government to continue functioning until a new Prime Minister and government are in place.

During her tenure as head of the French government, Ms. Borne pursued significant reforms, including pension reform that increased the retirement age to 63 years old and recently passed immigration reform. But as Prime Minister, Borne was unable to win much trust from the French people. Her policies consistently faced protests from opposition parties and drew several no-confidence votes.

President Macron is expected to announce Borne's successor on Tuesday. Public opinion suggests that Education Minister Gabriel Attal, who is a close ally of President Macron, is likely to get the position.
