(VOVWORLD) - French students returning to school Monday after the holidays remembered murdered school teacher Samuel Paty by observing one minute of silence at 11:00.

Mr. Paty was beheaded by an Islamic extremist outside the school where he taught on October 16, after he had shown cartoons of the Prophet Muhammad in class.
French President Emmanuel Macron promised to increase protection of schools and churches while once again condemning terrorism.
France is still reeling from the latest attack, which killed three people at Notre Dame cathedral in the city of Nice.
Depictions of the Prophet Muhammad prompted a terror attack in 2015 at the offices of the magazine Charlie Hebdo, which had printed cartoons of the Prophet Muhammad.
