In a joint declaration, the US, Germany, Japan, France, Canada, Italy and Britain, as well as the EU, said the framework encompasses elements including modern advanced military equipment, training, intelligence-sharing and cyber-defence.
In return, Ukraine would pledge improved governance measures, including through judicial and economic reforms and enhanced transparency.
Countries other than the G7 can also join this framework. The declaration said the G7 nations would begin bilateral talks with Ukraine immediately.
At the signing ceremony of the declaration, Ukrainian President Volodyrmyr Zelensky said that the results of the summit are good following the Ukraine’s attendance at NATO meetings.
Meanwhile, Russia considered this move to be badly mistaken and potentially very dangerous, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters in response to the security assurances.
On Wednesday, during a bilateral meeting on the sidelines of a NATO summit in Lithuania, US President Joe Biden emphasized the enduring US commitment to supporting Ukraine in its conflict with Russia and Ukraine's efforts as it pursues integration into the Euro-Atlantic community.
Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán said the Hungarian position is unchanged: it is peace, rather than weapons, that should be delivered to Ukraine, calling for a ceasefire and an urgent start to peace talks.
