(VOVWORLD) - A celebration took place on Tuesday in Quang Tri town to mark the 50th anniversary of the 81-day-and-night battle to defend the Quang Tri Ancient Citadel and the 75th anniversary of War Invalids and Martyrs' Day, July 27.

During the fierce battle in the summer of 1972, an estimated 328,000 tons of bombs were dropped on the old citadel and the town.
Major General Nguyen Xuan Sang, President of the Quang Tri Veterans Association, said that battle and the Dien Bien Phu in the air victory forced the US to resume negotiations and sign the Paris Agreement to end the war in Vietnam, setting the stage for the historic Ho Chi Minh Campaign that achieved victory in the spring of 1975.
On this occasion, many organizations and businesses presented gifts to Vietnamese heroic mothers and donated 10 charity houses to Quang Tri town.
